Raman Instruments Pvt. Ltd. (RIPL) was established in the year 1989 by a team of engineers from various fields, with an average work experience of over 10 years; in Industrial Marketing of high end goods and services, related to Power and Process Plant Instrumentation, Analytical Equipment, Telecom and Electronic Components.
We set out with an objective of providing an effective and efficient representation to the overseas companies in order to ensure their long term presence in India. Our objectives envisaged providing a wide range of services to the Indian industry; ranging from Marketing and Sales, Product Application Support, Installation & Commissioning Services, Pre and Post Warrant Support, to Long Term Availability of Spare Parts. In other words, the intent was to ensure that the overseas companies stood truly represented in India, with a high degree of meaningful visibility.
It was a
moment of honour in 1989 when we were chosen to represent well known
companies such as Solartron, a Division of Schlumberger Industries
of the UK, and Baird Corporation of USA, then a part of the Thermo
Optek Group; overlooking the claims of other well established and high
profile Indian companies.
Our Principles & Products
Solartron is the pioneer and inventor of Electronic Gauging &
Switching Systems, in association with the Central Electricity
Generating Board (CEGB) of the UK, for boiler drum water level
measurements in the Power and Process Industries. The trade name, Hydrastep, is now synonymous with drum level measurements. From the initial 150 installations in India, at the time we began representing Solarton,
our total installations have exceeded the figures of 1500 in the present fiercely competitive market.
Repeating success history in the
year 1996, we were chosen by another British company, Lintvalve
Electronic Systems Ltd., to represent their interests in India, for
their Boiler Tube Leak Detection Systems. It's a mere coincidence that even they
are the pioneers and inventors of this product, having researched
and developed it in association with the CEGB of the UK, some thirty
years ago. This is an early warning system for the leakage in Boiler Tubes, a
capital intensive product with a limited market. Our installation base
has nevertheless grown from about the initial 12 to the present 20.
According to the latest figures available, only 25 Boiler Tube Leak Detection Systems are present in India,
representing a significant share of the market. Following the familiar global phenomenon of mergers and acquisitions, Lintvalve is now
a part of Procon Engineering Limited, located in Sevenoaks, Kent, UK.
Ltd., a company based in Farnham, Surrey, are the Systems Integrators for
Solartron, who appointed us their representatives in 1996, for their
data acquisition systems, particularly the portable type for very
specific solutions in high precision measurements. The portable data
acquisition system was developed by DML as a result of our extensive
research on emerging markets and an active technical participation in
Another major activity of RIPL, since its inception, is
related to Spectroscopy, where we began by representing Baird
Corporation of USA, for their Optical Emission Spectrometers (OES).
Between 1989 & 2000, the installation base of Baird Spectrometers in
India rose from a mere 35 to about 125, sharing a quarter of the total
Indian market. Early in the year 2000, owing to strategic reasons and uncertainty created within the Baird Group, marked by large
scale mergers and acquisitions of other global spectrometer companies, we decided to relinquish the representation to end this
uncertainty. This came in the form of a representation agreement with a
fledgling Spectrometer manufacturing company from Germany, known as
Worldwide Analytical Systems AG (WAS), located in Uedem near
Dusseldorf. Today, we have over 40 Spectrometers installed in India
within a short period of three years, from WAS, whilst continuing to
service the 160 Baird Spectrometers sold by us earlier.
We have our offices in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, to
provide the right geographical coverage with a total manpower of
18. A large majority of our personnel are technically qualified
and well accomplished. All the key sales and service personnel have
undergone separate and specialized training at our principal
manufacturing facilities, situated abroad. All our offices, with an exception
of Hyderabad, which has a resident representative status, are fully
equipped to provide technical support and services, extending
beyond card level repairs, down to the component level.
Being a lean
and compact organization, we have an informal structure for uninhibited
interaction at all levels, allowing a free flow of relevant information.
As a result, the industry benefits from a quick response to sales,
supply and service situations. We have also invested adequately on
spare parts, to allow purchase in local currency and ensure that the
equipment down-time is kept to a bare minimum, in case of repairs.
The bulk of our revenues is reinvested towards business promotion
activities such as product presentations at customer premises,
organizing product seminars at different centres in India, participation in
theme fairs and exhibitions such as the Powergren, Chemtech, manpower development and training, etc.
This covers almost all the well known names in the respective segment of
the industry. Some of our major customers in the Power and Process industry
are NTPC, BHEL, Tata Electric Company, Reliance Industries, National
Fertilizers, Indian Oil, IFFCO, L&T, Tata Honeywell, AA, NTPC Alsthom, several State Electricity Boards, etc.
